Philip Beesley Studio
Creating a system of modular, durable, and visually coherent mounts for LED lights in an interactive art installation.
Details
During my internship at Philip Beesley Studio Inc. / Living Architecture Systems Group, I worked as an Industrial Design intern, where my main focus was designing a system of LED mounts for their architectural-scale interactive artworks. I designed, prototyped, tested, created technical drawings for, and helped produce these and other parts.
The main installation I worked on was for the 'Is it Alive?' exhibition at the Tilburg TextielMuseum in Tilburg, NL.

My Role
All sketches, 3D models, prototypes, and drawings are my own original work and ideas. Photography, renders, and diagrams were done collaboratively.
My work was largely focused on PBSI/LASG's work in the 'Is it Alive?' exhibit at the TextielMuseum, which explored the boundary between technology and living things. Centered around an Iris van Herpen dress, the canopy reacts to visitors through a system of sensors connected to movement, light, and sound outputs.
Above are a render and plan drawing of the work, which give some context to my contributions.
I designed a modular system of encapsulations and mounts for a new LED component and various glass pieces, including different sized vials and spheres.
The parts were resin printed and used a variety of fasteners to secure them. Easy assembly and disassembly was extremely important.
The spherical glass versions even enabled a new interaction: the dappled round light seen above.
My Work: Dressing
A smaller portion of my role consisted of creating a system of 'dressing' the outside of the sculpture with small glass spheres, fronds, and 3D printed connectors.
How did I get there?
